The program comes with a set of RAW and JPG presets for those who like starting the adjustment process in that way. Detail Recovery can counteract Noise Reduction, but generally to a much lesser extent – that is, detail and edge recovery are usually far more effective than their counter-impact on noise reduction. The idea is to get the balance just right between noise reduction and detail and edge retention. The manual warns repeatedly to proceed gently because the tools are powerful I found indeed that the warnings are well-taken. “Recover Detail” is for recovering image detail and texture, while “Reduce Blur” restores edge sharpness. Once Overall Strength is set, the others work incrementally off of that setting. The sixth is for cleaning-up clumps of colour noise. The other sliders are for Highlight, Shadow, Red Channel and Blue Channel noise. The first slider is for “Overall Strength” which controls everything else. It also allows us to look at where the noise is, by providing RGB, luminosity, red channel and blue channel views. Topaz DeNoise has six sliders for removing noise, two for improving detail and edge sharpness, and one for adding grain. Next step was to see how well Topaz DeNoisecould improve this image.įigure 2. ![]() Notice the characteristic green/magenta speckles all over the wall, which is off-white in the real world, and how the titles of the books in the book case are partially obscured by noise. Figure 2 shows a portion of the same image scaled to 100% screen magnification in the Topaz GUI. Wow! Did that ever work well! (Figures 1 and 2). To create the noisy digital images, I went for my point-and-shoot – a Panasonic Lumix LX-1 (the first in a succession of this camera line), set the ISO to 400 (the maximum), selected an under-lit subject and under-exposed the image on purpose, then in Photoshop cranked-up the exposure to fully reveal all the noise. Rather my purpose is to show what it does, with some comment on the settings as we move along. It’s easy to follow and the GUI is very user-friendly – it has only a small number of options to tweak and in fact can be self-taught in little time. That’s all contained in the manual accompanying the download. This review is not a step-by-step “how to” for using the plug-in. So I tested both digital image files and colour negative film scans and report on those results here. ![]() ![]() Applications designed for removing digital noise aren’t designed with scanner noise and film grain in mind, but if they can handle that too, it’s icing on the cake. Removing film grain while retaining image detail, however, remains a challenge for all those people scanning their archives and the small minority still shooting film. In fact, to test the application and prepare this review I took steps I’d never otherwise deploy in order to generate noisy images. Why? Digital noise reduction is looking after itself these days with the latest crop of DSLRs – the images are more often than not so clean that it’s only under stress conditions (really high ISO, low light, underexposure) that an industrial-strength noise remover is needed. My interest in this is two-fold: minor – reducing noise in digital images major – reducing grain and scanner noise from film scans. It’s easy to install (a plug-in in the Photoshop Filter menu, but also works with Lightroom, Photoshop Elements and several other applications), easy to use and the results (noise reduction with detail retention) are the best I’ve achieved from any noise mitigating application. But Topaz Labs claims it’s the best on the market and the download of a fully-functional 30-day trial is free, so why not give it whirl? I did and I was impressed. My first reaction when they announced it was kind of ho-hum, yet another up-date of a noise removal program – we already have at least three very decent ones (Neat Image, Noise Ninja and Noiseware), not to speak of the improved tools in Lightroom, Camera Raw and other image editing applications. Inadequate or inconsistent moisture causes oddly shaped or poor-tasting fruit. Just keep the soil consistently moist with an inch of water per week (more if temperatures sizzle and rain is scarce). Wire is easy for the tendrils of climbing cucumbers to grab as the plant grows.Ĭucumbers grow fast and don't demand a lot of care. A 12- to 18-inch diameter cage made from 4- or 5-foot welded wire fencing or hog wire will support 2 or 3 vines. ![]() This keeps the fruit clean and saves space. Straw mulch is also thought to be uncomfortable for slugs and creates an uneasy footing for cucumber beetles, helping to keep them at bay. Mulch is especially important to keep the fruit clean for bush types and vines not growing on a trellis. If the weather is unseasonably cool, you can wait a while to mulch until the ground is warmed by the sun. In areas where spring is long and cool, you can warm the soil 3 to 4 degrees by covering the hill or row with black plastic. If you do not plant in black plastic, then mulch with pine straw, wheat straw, chopped leaves, or your favorite organic mulch shortly after planting. For vines trained on a trellis, space plants 1 foot apart. (Compost or composted manure will work, too.) Plant seedlings 36 to 60 inches apart, depending on variety (check the stick tag). To improve the soil and help create the root environment needed for a big harvest, work several inches of aged compost-enriched Miracle-Gro® Performance Organics® All Purpose In-Ground Soil into the top few inches of your existing garden soil.
If you can’t find soil, you’ll need to use dwarven irrigation by creating wooden buckets at the carpenter’s shop, digging a hole with the Channel option, and then labeling it as a Pond in the zones menu. While this soil is easily accessible in the first few z-levels below ground, it is much harder in other layers. Depending on the biome, it can be silt, sand, loam, clay, or mud. If you want to grow proper dwarven crops underground, you’ll need an area with a soil floor. If you use them for drinks, it becomes a sustainable supply. When you start out, you’ll want to go into the Kitchen labor menu, and turn off using plump helmets for food. There is a nuance with Plump Helmets, where if you cook them for food you don’t get their seeds back, but if you brew them into drinks, you do. Note that drink is more important to Dwarves than food. Dwarven farms are impressively productive, so growing even a few Plump Helmets on a small, unfertilized plot can feed your entire clan. You don’t need to make massive farms either even a small plot of 2×2 or 4×4 can feed many dwarves. All you need to do is build a Farm Plot under the Build-Workshops-Farming option, and you can place it on any soil. ![]() Once you’re ready to start farming, it’s relatively easy. Technically, they can drink water, but it’ll quickly put them in a foul mood, and that’s not good for anyone. Booze is an essential element of your dwarves’ diet. ![]() Plus, you can convert these wild crops into booze by using the Still you built during the tutorial. When you first start your Dwarf Fortress adventure, your initial crew can survive for a decent amount of time by hunting, fishing, and foraging for wild plants. So, if you’re looking to build a thriving fortress, incorporate stairs into your plans. Dwarves are content to have living and eating quarters above or below their workspaces. That means a stockpile of metal beneath your blacksmiths can be just as useful as one beside them. Two rooms or hallways connected by a staircase are effectively adjacent, with no tiles between them. Staircases are key to designing a successful underground base. Now, let’s talk about the importance of verticality in Dwarf Fortress. Some even opt for a central 3×3 spine staircase as the main feature of their fortress. That’s why many experienced players design their fortress with 2-3 tile-wide hallways and 2×2 block staircases. And if other creatures get in their way, they’ll slow down significantly. Locked doors won’t keep out stronger creatures like trolls, who can easily bash their way through.įor a dwarf, one tile is one tile, whether it’s flat ground, stairs, or a ramp. But if you want to keep something locked down, you’ll need a perfectly boxed-in area made of natural or constructed walls. They’re able to move diagonally and even shimmy through tight spaces between filled tiles. Let’s get down to business and talk about Dwarven ergonomics, shall we? To start, units in Dwarf Fortress move across tiles at different speeds based on their species and other factors. Channeling creates a ramp on the floor below, and it may be challenging to visualize how this works across multiple levels, but don’t worry, you’ll soon get the hang of it. On the other hand, channeling a tile means removing both the block and the floor or just the floor, if the block was already gone. When you mine a tile, you remove the block, but leave the floor intact. ![]() Essentially, a tile comprises two elements: the block and the floor. If you want to make it far in Dwarf Fortress, you need to grasp the fundamental concept of how tiles are structured. This will give you more time to react and make decisions, especially during the game’s early stages. If things start moving too quickly for you, consider adjusting the run speed to 60 FPS or lower in the settings. ![]() It’s worth noting that Dwarf Fortress operates on a frame-by-frame basis, meaning that the simulation is synced to your computer’s frames-per-second (FPS). This will provide a solid foundation for your fortress and make it easier to defend against potential threats. When starting out, build your base in the first few layers of pure stone. The key to a successful fort lies in digging deeper. Instead, focus on expanding your knowledge and taking things one step at a time. Don’t blame your dwarves if things go south, they’re doing their best. But don’t worry, I’m here to give you some advice that will help ease you into this world of wonder.Īs a beginner, one of the most important things to remember is to take your time and be patient with yourself. With many buttons to push and intricate systems to uncover, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Congratulations! You’ve made it through the tutorial, but your journey into the depths of Dwarf Fortress is far from over. ![]() Listen to that prompting of the Holy Spirit. It isn’t something that requires more willpower or being more disciplined. Making time for God shouldn’t be part of our “to-do” list. This is what will give us true rest, renewal, and a time to recharge for what our busy days hold. No matter the time of day, Jesus shows us it’s important to make time for Him. “ One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray and spent the night praying to God.” Luke 6:12 In the late afternoon after feeding the 5,000, Jesus dismissed his disciples and “went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.” Matthew 14:23 “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” Mark 1:35 Don’t get discouraged! We can use those times for worship and conversation with God. There will be times where we are spending 5-minute increments before we walk out the door, or while we are in the car, in the shower, or performing a mindless chore. A good starting place is to think about your day and decide where you can give God the attention he deserves. Be intentional about evaluating how and where you spend your time. It’s not about having the time it’s making the time for God. Giving your time to God should be your priority. Making time for God requires effort, purposeful attention, and a search of our hearts. We can fill our lives with busyness no matter what age or stage of life. We may even feel the Holy Spirit tugging at us but wonder how to add one more thing to our day. They may be important, worthwhile, and Godly endeavors, but can keep us from spending time with God.
